New Years Traditions

As we all know, the new year comes with a clean slate and an opportunity to make this year better than the previous.  But how do you ensure that the new year is more prosperous than the last?  By eating the traditional “New Years Day” food, of course!

Prosperity
In order to be monetarily prosperous in the new year, you are supposed to eat Collard Greens.  These delicious, leafy, vinegary greens are not only delicious but also a southern staple every day of the year-not just New Year’s Day.

Luck
For luck, you’re supposed to eat black-eyed peas.  While they are a little bland and mushy by themselves, my family always ate them with a little bit of ketchup to add some extra tangy flavor.

Health
In Charleston, there is no shortage of delicious pulled pork barbecue.  Which is perfect since pork is what you are supposed to eat for health in the new year.  The best part about pork is that there are so many  varieties, everyone is bound to find a type they like.  There’s mustard based BBQ, vinegar based BBQ, tomato based BBQ, not to mention pork chops and tons of other ways to cook this delectable meat!
